Essay #3: Composition of Two Genres ( Hate Crimes)

Genre #1 Meme:
For this genre I chose to target a specific audience. My intended audience was a younger demographic , more specifically college and high school students who maybe are apart of the LGBTQ community or people who support them. I chose to do a meme because it is what a lot of my intended audience views on social media nowadays and this could just be posted on their feed.. This meme takes on a very satirical approach to my topic which is hate crimes against the LGBTQ community. I felt as though satire was a good method of relating with my audience.This genre is heavily based on pathos. This comedic approach was to emphasize the ridiculous and outrageous position that President Trump has on the LGBTQ community.

My purpose of this meme was to show how Trump’s views on the LGBTQ community were exactly the opposite of Obama’s views.Trump is basically trying to wash away all the positive aspects Obama has done for the LGBTQ community. Also my purpose is to show Trump’s hypocrisy from the start of his campaign to where it is currently. Trump has said in the past that he was actually for the LGBTQ community and had respected Caitlyn Jenner’s decision but as we see now this is not the case. This was just to get more votes to become president.

Genre #2 PSA:
Since I wanted my genres to address the same issue in different ways , I decided to make this genre address the hate crimes against violence in a much more serious manner. This PSA is directed towards government officials , more specifically the Trump administration. I chose the Trump Administration for my intended audience because he and his team are the biggest reason for the epidemic that the LGBTQ community and especially trans who struggle with gender identity are facing right now. I also chose this genre to target the Trump Administration rather than the meme because this PSA is focused on Logos rather than pathos. I provided research/facts/statistics which the Trump Administration can’t argue against.

My purpose for the PSA was to inform the Trump Administration about the condition of the LGBTQ community ever since Trump came into presidency. It will expose how Trump never cared for them like how Obama had. I also wanted the Trump Administration to realize how America is not becoming great again but worse when it comes to hate crimes. I also wanted to prove to them that the LGBTQ community , especially transgenders are facing heavy discrimination in one of their most important aspects of life which is their work. Under Trump’s law , it is legal for a owner of a business/company to not hire somebody just because of their sexual orientation and their gender identity which is what this country was not known for.Also he is banning trans people to be in the military. So once again , this goes back to Trump’s hypocrisy to when he said he was Pro LGBTQ before his presidency.

So overall both these genres take on the same issue in different ways which in turn targets different audiences. My meme focused on logos and satire which hoped to attract a younger demographic while my PSA emphasized logos which hopes to attract an older one.
